It's honestly no secret that good customer service is paramount - and if I had to put a ring on it, Santis would be my first choice. Ambiance is just the the beginning; the interiors are warm and familiar, yet modern and inviting. This is a place that you could stay all day in, for numerous reasons. Before I delve into how the food has continued to impress me since my first meal here, special mention must be made with how well Daniela and Mary Santi actually treat their customers. It's a little cafe tucked into the edge of Hampden Road, right in between of the hustle and bustle of Sir Charles Gardener Hospital and the University of Western Australia...and yet, arriving at Santis now almost feels like coming home. It isn't uncommon to see customers being greeted on a first name basis, everybody is always smiling whether it's storming down with rain outside, or in the very early hours of the morning.
My go-to dish at Santis revolves around their Hand Cut Chips; I can rarely resist a good hand cut chip, especially when matched with excellent aioli. The chips are well seasoned and crispy fresh; I've only had one floppy chip incident and ever since then it's been a pleasure. The Italian Burger, which as recently just returned to the menu is a comforting mix of savoury flavours, which are wonderfully balanced by the fresh tomato and salad. But what really makes the burger stand out, is the onion jam - it's a great accompaniment to the flavourful patty!
Another thing I really enjoy about Santis is their Traditional Breakfast; priced at $19.50, it includes two eggs of any style, buttery sourdough toast, roasted tomato, house made baked beans, feta cheese, Italian sausage and bacon - I truly believe it's one of the most value for money and variety filled Breakfast Fry Up's in Perth. On a recent visit, I also enjoyed the Traditional Breakfast with Poached Eggs and Hollandaise Sauce on the side, it's a generous feed and it's lovely how Santis always aims to cater to every customer's various preferences.
Other than an extensive Breakfast and Lunch menu (served till 2pm), quick bites and takeaway options from the display fridge and an impressive looking array of cakes are also available. What caught my attention the most about the display fridge were the large hunks of fresh Lasagna awaiting lunch time punters. The texture of the pasta is impecable; naturally, the Santis are Italians, and this is another example of how they manage to bring in their amazing food culture and heritage into the dishes they have on offer in the cafe.
I've been on the hunt for a good Chai Latte for awhile (Search Instagram: #philosophicalchai) and I would say that Santi's definitely offers one of the best. Their coffee beans are exclusive to the cafe; 100% organic and rainforest alliance, and roasted locally. It's essential to serve good coffee given that their location is saturated with students and hospital workers - they do not fall short here either.
What keeps me coming back to Santi's boils down to the excellent selection of food that they have on offer, and the ambience that is comfortably fostered by the friendly staff. There is always a constant source of positive energy within the cafe, and it's a great place to pick yourself up in. I would say that competitors within the Perth cafe market have a lot to learn from Santi's; outstanding, above and beyond service, and along their generous brunch offerings, set a very high benchmark and it would be completely unrelenting to not include Santi's as one of my favourite cafes in Perth.
