I used Week 2 of #CoffeeOfPerth as an opportunity to check out some very fresh, never before visited cafes, as well as continuing to explore various types of coffee - yes, I do consider an Espresso Martini to be coffee and if I was going to, it seemed logical to try and find the best one! It also turned out to be an accidental mini "Big Breakfast" hunt - I rarely have cravings for huge fry ups, but...when in Rome! Or in my case...when in Vic Park!
As mentioned before in Week 1; do note that for the sake of testing consistency, scores are representative of the experience I had that day, irregardless of how much or how little I have enjoyed previous experiences.
DAY EIGHT - HARVEST ESPRESSO
Coffee: Long Macchiato, topped up full.
Coffee Beans: Five Senses.
Notes: I've always considered the coffee here to be a bit like a punch in the face...in the best way possible. It's a strong, dark, sustaining and an efficient wake up call - I do think that it's important for good brunch places to follow through with good coffee and at Harvest Espresso, both boxes are boldly ticked.
Tuesday to Sunday, 7:00AM - 4:00PM
To put in simply, this is the best Big Breakfast I've had in Perth. Each component shone; especially my usual breakfast nemesis, the wilted spinach. There was no green watery mush in sight; each spinach leaf was so buttery and perfectly seasoned. I could almost say that the Spinach was my favourite part, along with the perfectly grilled tomato, delicious porky sausage and my must-have poached eggs.
Can't wait for the Spring Menu!
DAY NINE - ZUCCHERO ESPRESSO BAR
Coffee Beans: TBA
Notes: Bland. It was one of those not quite sure if I'm a latte, but I'm definitely not a hot chocolate Mochas. I can commend the texture but the taste was washed out by an artificial, powdery chocolate taste and there was just not enough oomph behind the coffee. Up side? Comic relief by what was thought to be wrapped breath mints, that actually turned out to be whole sugar cubes!
Tueday - Friday, 6:30AM - 2:30PM
Weekends, 6:30AM - 3:00PM
It's interesting how their online menu states that this is actually $17!
Honestly, I really wasn't a fan - the mushrooms looked creamy and were accompanied by a sauce that was studded with flecks of dried herbs, but tasted drastically under seasoned. The sausage and sourdough were both dry, nothing really excited me about this except for the well poached eggs.
I'd rather have my Full Breakfast at Harvest Espresso any day!
DAY TEN - UNCLE JOE'S MESS HALL
Coffee: Cold Drip
Coffee Beans: Equador
Notes: I know that it looks like coke but it's actually just a very strong glass of coffee; fruity and possibly boarder line sour. I like a good Cold Drip and I generally have it with a splash of milk. It's not for the faint hearted as it is exceptionally strong, robust and will keep you perked up for the rest of the day. There was a little delay in my order and after I followed it up, I found a nice almond cookie plonked along side my saucer. Not bad, for my old time favourite, Zekka's replacement. I look forward to trying more!
Can't wait to come try their breakfast and lunch specials soon!
Monday - Saturday, from 7:00AM - 4:00PM
DAY ELEVEN - THE CLASSROOM BAR
Coffee: Espresso Martini
Coffee Beans: Darkstar
Notes: The excellent texture came from the liquid nitrogen - it was like enjoying a really strong coffee ice cream. I could also liken this to eating a tiramisu, minus the soggy biscuits. It's pricey, but has a lot of theatre and bar side magic involved. You're paying for the inventiveness behind the drink, the quality bartender and the excellent execution of the various ingredients and flavours used.
Tuesday - Friday from 4:00PM - 12:00AM
Weekends from 12:00PM - 12:00AM, Closed Monday.
DAY TWELVE - CAFE ONE 2WO 5IVE
Coffee Beans: Five Senses
Notes: Honestly, am I really chuffed that the beloved "Cafe Procrasti-crepes", otherwise known as La Galette de France changed hands and decided to downsize? Not really. There was a little uproar amongst UWA students, but I did really want to give the new place a chance. The coffee - is still great; smooth, rich and definitely one of the better Mochas I've tried throughout this coffee challenge. Unfortunately, the same can't be said about the rest of the cafe components. Not only are the legendary crepes gone, but Cafe One 2wo 5ive no longer produces food at the standard of it's pastry predecessor. Another down side? The service is horrid.
Verdict: 4/5 for the coffee alone.
DAY TWELVE - FELIX AND CO
Coffee: Long Mac, topped up full
Coffee Beans: Proud Mary (yes!)
Notes: Ah, Proud Mary...one of my favourite cafes in Melbourne has finally released their beans over to the West Coast. Every mouthful was so smooth with a consistent, yet subtle strength and a fruity after taste. My only qualm was that it wasn't as hot as I'd like it to be. Whilst I've heard that the service staff are all very knowledgable baristas, I personally found them to be a bit abrasive and short - it was early in the morning, but regardless...it's a fairly new place and it's probably not the best way to kick start your brand image.
Monday to Friday from 6:30AM - 4:00PM
Saturday from 06:30AM - 2:00PM
DAY FOURTEEN - MARY ST. BAKERY
Coffee: Long Mac, topped up full.
Coffee Beans: Pound Coffee
Notes: When my first coffee arrived, I was honestly surprised and wondered how many times it had changed hands before being brought out to our table. Had it been me, I would have remade it on the spot. The coffee was burnt, the milk was curdled and not even filled to the top. The staff were great about replacing it and the second cup was so much better at showcasing the iconic bitterness of Pound Coffee. It was a very disappointing start for a highly anticipated visit to a new place.
Verdict: The first cup, definitely a 0/5, and the second, a 3.5/5
Honestly, it hasn't been the best week for coffee hunting for me. There was a consistent, slightly above average selection showcased within Week 2, as well as some complete disasters. Best of the week goes to Felix and Co; it's convenient for those in the UWA/OCHWA/QEII area, but honestly - I wasn't so chuffed with the service, but would definitely give the place another go. The hunt for the best still continues for the rest of this week and by the end of it, I will be announcing the Top 5 coffees of Perth!
